A sustainable arena in the heart of Bergen
With its latest certification, Grieghallen has become more environmentally friendly than ever. This is how they contribute to making Bergen more sustainable.
How do we work with sustainability on a daily basis?
Our rule of thumb is that sustainability must be included in the decision making for every choice, big and small, that we make. The public, organizers and partners must be able to trust that Grieghallen is a sustainable venue.
During the last years, Grieghallen has focused strongly on sustainability. Our annual environmental action plans are being followed up/realized and we have implemented new internal routines and encouraged attitude change and motivation among our colleagues. It is important that our goals are clear and ambitious, to keep up motivation as well as demonstrating that our work has an actual impact.
Grieghallen is an older building of great symbolic significance both locally, nationally and internationally. It was, however, not constructed with sustainability in mind. This is why we now make every effort to achieve the same level of sustainability as any modern building, within the possibilities that we have.
The beehives on the roof and our honey production have become a symbol demonstrating that we take our commitment to sustainability seriously. But we have also replaced thousands of light fixtures with LEDs, re-insulated, increased sorting at source routines considerably and we use district heating.
And we have even more exciting plans for reducing our climate footprint in the time ahead.

Our partners and suppliers are environmentally certified
One of our goals is to ensure that partners and event organisers comply with Eco-Lighthouse’s criteria for green events and conferences. We collaborate with our long-term partners to identify the most sustainable solutions.
Here you can read more about how our long-term partners work with sustainability:
Sorting, recycling and reuse
We work to ensure that the use of disposable items is kept to a minimum. We also have clear routines and well‑marked, accessible facilities for waste sorting and disposal for both employees and visitors.
We encourage all event organisers to reduce the distribution of product samples and promotional items during fairs and conferences.
Used banners are delivered to Nordnes Verksteder, who repurpose them into reusable bags.
We do not allow releases of balloons, confetti, glitter or similar items outdoors.
The food in Grieghallen
The food served in Grieghallen is provided by De Bergenske Servering. Together with them, we focus on locally produced, seasonal ingredients. We always aim to offer organic food and beverage options.
Sustainable food production, fair trade and animal welfare are important to us, and we take steps to reduce the amount of meat used in our menus. We are also working to include CO₂ footprints for all dishes on our menus.
All seafood on our menus comes from sustainable sources and is certified according to the MSC and ASC standards.
